does it compress the signal? thinking about using a sbd > minidisc > zoom source for a dvd and am wondering what I'll get from the zoom source. my aud is very chatty so I'd like to get the board but there isn't a "lossless" board source.

MY MD, SONY MZ-RH1 does a straight PCM/WAV record. Good front end and low noise. Unless you are recording in the Atrac formats you are giong to get pure audio, uncompressed into and onto the MD.
Why isn't the board lossless? It is a live feed. Are they screwing with the sound on the board? You should be getting the same signal that is going to the PA, but without the PA's flaws, just the signal.
What am I missing here?

I think what he's asking is whether or not the line out on the MD device will compress (ie. atrac) the signal on the line out.
SBD>MD recording device>Zoom (via line out on the MD recorder). Will the zoom be fed a compression-free (no atrac) signal? Or will it be fed an atrac signal?

Hoping someone can provide a solid answer on this as I need to know too.
Dave.

Well, now we have two folks with the same question. Here is what I would do, run a test. Look at the output file from line-out in an audio editor. Atrac will not have a full audio spectrum, the highs will not be there that are in an uncompressed file.
Better, go to http://forums.minidisc.org/ and ask. That place is all about MD. They would know if anyone would.

The only non-compressed audio comes from using a HI-MD deck set on the PCM record mode, any other record mode will be lossy (just in differing degrees) Running it analog out or doing a digi transfer makes absolutely no difference as far as it being lossy or not, and in all honesty, there's no audible difference either.
