Is the R-44 able to multi track?
Can it record on two tracks while simultaneously playback on the other two tracks?
Simple question i think, i flipped through the manual but its wasn't something that jumped right out at me.
Then i pose another question, Is there another 4 channel portable deck of this quality that can record on two tracks while simultaneously playing back the other two tracks?

no. the R44 is designed for capturing up to 4 tracks simultaneously.
Whenever you press the record button it will automagically create a new file/folder, so there's no way to play back existing tracks and record alongside them.
If you want that functionality you should probably look at the Boss and Tascam PortaStudio type devices. Lots of manufacturers make them.

I am looking at the KORG D-888. But its only capable of 16/24khz at best, i was looking for something a little better

The D888 is indeed a 16 bit 44.1kHz recorder, but none the less good enough for recording classical concerts with (well, that's what I use it for and I'm very happy with it). However, for any kind of multitracking etc it's hard to beat the PC/DAW route, rather than hardware. The D88 is a great location recorder for those wanting 8 channels on a tight budget, but that's all I would use it for.
