Title: ISO 4 track recorder

hello,

i'm sort of a newbie here. i have done some recording with a Sony D100 DAT a while back.

i have been looking all over the internet, but haven't (yet) found anything that suits my needs.

i need a recorder that records 4 tracks *simultaniously*

i want to record live shows with two tracks from the board and two tracks from microphones.
i doubt there's a handheld recorder out there, but i need at least a portable one, preferably not too big.
16bit/44.1 khz would be ok, but the higher the better. hard disk drive / internal storage or removable card doesn't matter, but it should do at least 2-3 hours of continous recording.

price range ~500-600 USD

or maybe i could use two 2-track recorders? would i have any timing issues when mixing the tracks together?

any ideas welcome ;-)

Go another $150 more and there's a great unit in the Yard Sale section.

Edirol R44 or R4 but you are going to have to put out a little more $$$ ;)

Do you need the recorder to lay down four separate tracks? Otherwise you can get an UA-5 (+ H1xx or MTII) and feed it with mic+board and record matrix on the fly. 2 channels only, but it has been done successfully.

If you can't find a cheap R44, you could go the lappy way and pair up an Asus Eee PC 901 (long battery life model) with an external 4-channel sound card like M-Audio Fast Track Ultra or similar.

Thumbs up on the R-44, too.  Been using mine for about two months now and recorded about 10+ hours of material (both 2- and 4-tracks with phantom) without a single hitch.  Suffice to say, I'm a HUGE fan of this recorder and it's definitely one of the better investments I've made.
