Title: Help required - R-09HR and levels
Post by: polewka on January 30, 2009, 03:53:07 PM
Got my rig running nicely now

R-09HR + SPSB 8 + AT853's

I record loud rock shows mainly and am running at rec. level 14. I'm a bit nervous about setting them higher, but find that in post editting I have to boost by 10db or more.

I want to run the rig at a higher level to reduce the hiss when boosted volume in post. If I ran them at rec. level 20 or so, as long as the peak red led didn't display, then I guess I'm going to get a decent recording that needs less volume boost on the pc when editting. I just want to make sure that I don't run them too hot and distort the recording.

I think I'm right in stating that pushing the rec. level to 20 would be fine, as long as the led didn't flash, then the recording should be just as sweet, only louder on the flash as a final result.

Hope I'm making sense. Really would like someone just to confirm my thoughts on this idea ?

Cheers

I have an 09HR and from what I have read and used, most people say raise it until it gets to 12 on the 09HR. I'm not quite sure what a spsb 8 is but you may want to invest in a pre-amp if you're concerned about the hiss.

good luck,
Sean

Are you rec levels at 14 runnig Line In? Man, you're taping some really loud shows  ;)!
Well, you've already received a nice piece of advice in a previous message: keep your peaks around -12db (if using 24bit) and raise the levels later. It's perfectly OK and you should be fine doing so.

I want to run the rig at a higher level to reduce the hiss when boosted volume in post.

I would pick up a CA-9100 preamp in YS or from the retail section.  I used to run the AT853s > 9100 > R-09 and the noise was significantly lower than when I was using a battery box.  Of course, YMMV.

I've been told that it's not advisable to boost your volume in post any more than 3db at a whack.  Always better to record in 24-bit, then post volume boosts are much less "damaging".
