Title: mk capsules>KCY>VST 62 IUg>AK SU/2U cable>SD 702?
Post by: noam on February 02, 2009, 08:58:58 PM
I'm not sure which forum this question belongs in: I use Schoeps capsules>KCY ending in 5-pin binder>Sonosax lemosax>SONY PCM D1 (unbalanced).

I would like instead to connect the capsules>KCY to the Sound Devices 702.

Is this the right way to do it: mk capsules>KCY ending in 5-pin binder>Phantom-powered Stereo Amplifier VST 62 IUg>AK SU/2U cable(Stereo XLR-5F jack to two XLR-3M plugs)>702 balanced XLR inputs?

Also, the 702 will lie on its side panel in a large suit pocket - how warm does the 702 get? The VST 62 IUg will share the pocket with the 702.

thanks, Noam

Wont happen, you will need the full bodies and a set of XLR cables

From the Schoeps website info, looks like this would work.  And AFAICT it's what NicksPicks uses (one example on LMA (http://www.archive.org/details/rd2008-11-08.nickspicks)), though instead of the AK SU/2U he has a DIY 5-pin XLR > 2 x 3-pin XLR.  The VST 62 IUg replaces the CMC mic bodies and allows one to use the KCY cable instead of KC cables.

Barely warm. It won't burn anything. It's a nice unit - wish I could keep mine but can't afford it.

Scott from Redding Audio said it should work and Doug Oade says that's the way to do it. I ordered it - the VST 62 IUg is a special order, no one has it in stock, ONE MONTH...:-(

It will work fine. In fact Fozzy uses this exact setup except with a 722.

Sorry this might be a silly question ... what is the role of VST 62 IUg?? Does it provide the mics with 48V phantom power?

It is a stereo "body"  instead of using 2 CMC's. Schoeps KCY cable>VST62UI>5pin out.  You can use a 5-pin to L/R 3-pin XLR breakout cable, or do what I did..have a custom built Aerco with a 5-pin XLR in..

The AK SU/2U will probably be expensive, knowing Schoeps accessories.  You can have one of the cable makers on the board make one for you (Nicks Picks, Darktrain or Kindcables).  And then it will fit better in the bag with low pro stubby Neutriks.  The VST62 is long, it will cause problems in your bag in terms of length if you do not get the stubby 5pin, that is unless you run a Lowe Pro 5 or the likes.  I use a Kindcable stubby 5pin to 2 X 3pin and it fits a Lowepro 3AW along with a V3, MT, VR Box and 9V DVD batt with room for accessories (WS, stereo bar) in the main compartment ...I have to keep the thing at an angle (like 40 degrees) or it does not fit.

I'm sorry, can you translate that into English, please?

How do I contact Nicks Picks, Darktrain or Kindcables?

What is this about low pro stubby Neutriks?

I e-mailed hydra-audio the following e-mail 2 days ago and got no response (they have no phone #):"I need a cable that would be the equivalent of the Schoeps AK SU/2U cable, that is Stereo XLR-5F jack to two XLR-3M plugs (to go into the Sound Devices 702 balanced XLR inputs) but I need it 5 feet long.

Here is a link to the Schoeps cable:

NicksPicks, Darktrain, and Kindkables are all TSers who make custom cables for people.  You may find them by searching (http://taperssection.com/index.php?action=mlist;sa=search) the TS Member list (http://taperssection.com/index.php?action=mlist).  Best bet is to PM them, or call (if they have a #).

"Stubby" XLR connectors are like these (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,110932.msg1481708.html#msg1481708) (please don't take the link as an endorsement of Darktrain's products;  it was simply the first picture I found -- I don't necessarily endorse one over the other).  Depending on your gear bag layout, they can save space and keep the gear more compact.

I thought the 5pin XLR > 2x3 pin XLR cable came with the VST62ui.  Is this not the case?

No the cable does not come with the VST.

cable not included.  i pieced one together for about $20 in parts

My VST61iu took about 6 weeks.  Redding does not stock them and they are not something they stock @ the factory.

I have serial number 206 so i don't think many of these exist.
