Title: Church Audio mic and pre producing distortion from way back?
Post by: dee-j on February 08, 2009, 02:03:05 AM
I recorded a show in a small civic center with Church Audio mini binaural mic and a Church preamp (into JB3) and the sound came out very bassy and distorted sounding. The odd thing to me is that I had the preamp nob turned just at the point where there is 0 gain with bass filter on AND I was sitting up in the stadium seating, far from the speakers. Now maybe none of that matters, I'm not sure. It was a loud concert and my girlfriend and I could "feel the bass" in our chests at times.

So, my question is: Was my mic too weak to handle the bass or could something else be the issue? I'm attaching a sample which has been amplified without clipping in CEP. Any thoughts are welcome. I've made some good recordings with this set up since that concert, but I'm wondering if they are just inadequate for loud shows. I will attach a pic of the mics as well.

Here are pics of the mics and preamp as well as a shot from about where we were sitting, just for reference.

These mics were a prototype mic for me I only ever sold two pairs.. If you want something better I would take these mics back on a trade in for a pair of ca-14's

Thank you all for your responses. I've never really understood about bass/volume distortion and still wonder what factors contributed legitimately to the resulting recording. Someone mentioned echos using omis, I can understand that (didn't cross my mind at the time).

As for the lineage, it was the shown mics and preamp (0 gain, bass filter on) > JB3 (line-in). I do not know the model numbers of the mics and preamp. When I had e-mailed Chis about getting mics and preamp a year or so ago, we talked about different things and I'm not sure what I ended up with.

Please let me note that I have made a nice sounding recording since this recording in discussion with these mics and preamp. However, it was in a small bar and the bass was not too bad. It was very loud though, as I was right up front. Loud enough to distort my camcorder audio notably, but no distortion that I can tell from the mics on the JB3 recording.
