Title: R09HR with MixPre, Optimal Settings...
Post by: jbw on March 11, 2009, 06:59:09 PM
Hey all,

I received my R09HR today along with the silicon jacket. So far everything is looking/sounding pretty nice. My main concern is setting the R09HR to receive the output of my mixpre.

From what I understood, with units like the Zoom H2, at the Gain Setting L (Low) and level at 100, the audio coming in from the Line-In remains unaltered.

What is the equivalent setting for the R09HR? (I believe the default when I received the unit was 40, but I am not positive on this)

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Cheers.

'Unity' is thought to be around 50 on the R-09HR, but there isn't really any definitive source for that.

The 09HR has NO LINE INPUT limitations, so you can run your preamplifier as hot as you like, then adjust the 09HR's recording levels to suite your tastes or VU peaks/headroom margin.

That's what I've been told several times. But five days ago Chris Church said:

"Unity gain on the R-09 HR is at setting -38 with a -10 db input with a 5k output impedance from the source.
So setting #38 for most sources via the line input will produce a wav file of the same amplitude of the input signal as seen at the line input.
So If your running at 50 you are using gain
"

I'm lost again  ;D

Thanks for the info Dede.  I usually set the R-09HR at 40 and then adjust the gain on the MixPre to peaks around -12 to -6dB, and I've been satisfied with the results.  I guess that's what's important.  :P

Exactly. I usually do the same. ;)

As will.

I have been just leaving at what I remeber as the default when I received it (40) and adjusting solely on the mixpre. So far the results have been better than I expected.

Thanks Gents! ;D

+3. Same here. My R09HR stays on 40 and the MixPre does any heavy lifting.
