Title: Thinking of upgrading from an R-1 to a ???
Post by: smat on March 16, 2009, 08:55:17 PM
I love my R-1 and I know it well.  It's just too bulky for stealth taping, so I'm looking for something similar but smaller.  Suggestions??

Looks like the R-9 can be had for $200 or less.  Is the R-9hr really that big of an improvement on the R-9?
Also, is the preamp in the R-9 and HR identical to the preamp in the R-1?

Yes the HR is a much better recorder.
And no the preamp is not identical to the R-1  ;)

The R-09HR is considerably slimmer than the R-1
R-1...........134 x 99 x 30 mm
R-09HR......113 x 62 x 27 mm

I just ordered a Tascam DR100.  It came down to that and the Marantz and size made the call.  For $400 if its a POS, I can still get the Marantz.  I still laugh when I compare it to what my first Panasonic SV250 DAT cost

That's the main reason I am looking to upgrade.  What features make the HR worth the extra $150?  I'm not too picky about digi in.  My main concerns are size, level readout, etc,

As Chris said, better preamp when going mic-in.
Search the forum here for spectrograms, the difference is very visible. And better noise floor in general.
Also, more stable input jack compared to the first run of R09.
