Title: questions on scms, sbm-1, refurbished d-100's, yah!!
Post by: Pelican on January 07, 2004, 09:47:58 AM
i'm a musician who will be buying a dat to do field and home recording and am looking specifically at the d100 and m1.  i've heard that the only difference between the two is scms.

anyone here in similar shoes with words of warning about scms?  if necessary, is it defeatable? i

i can forsee having to edit some of the work i record, so i don't want to get the wrong one.

also, will the sbm-1 (i think that's what it's called) improve the recordings on my minidisc/dat recorder enough to warrant spending the extra $'s on one?  i've read about mods for these too but considering i'll be recording strictly voice and acoustic guitar, would they be useful?

lastly, has anyone bought a refurbished d100 for $499 on the internet? there's a place that sells these and i am curious if it's a good idea at that price.  i know there's a one year warranty included from sony on the package.

nice clouds to you and thanks for any help you send my way...

How are you serving the music up to the DAT?   Analog?  Digital?   You could get a JB3 for less perhaps.  Definately need some more info probably to make a wise choice.

i have a pair of josephson microphones and also a sound professionals lavalier mic pair so one of those.  one requires phantom power, the other doesn't/

anyway, i assume that's analog, yeh?

The Jukebox 3 may be just what you need. It's an inexpensive ($179 refurbished) portable hard drive recorder. It's pure digital and no media (ie DAT tapes) to hassle with. You would need phantom power (or a pre that provieds phantom power). But you'd need to provide that with a sony DAT as well. So no big deal. Go up to the top of this page and click on the "search" button. Then type in Jukebox 3 and/or JB3. There's tons of info on here about them.

ehhhhhhhhhhh dfgkldfhjad

just be careful, you may not want to use a jb3 if no one will be patching from you.

just turn the scms "off" on the m1 and you are good to go

I'm told the stock sbm-1 isn't much better as an a/d compared to the d100 or m1, however, the line-modified sbm-1s are leaps and bounds better.
