I'm trying to transfer tapes to digital. Running tape output into the 1/4 inch line inputs but the levels are so low. I put the mic trims on lowest setting right? (Turning them up just seems to add hiss but no volume). Then I put gain to max. But still the level is so low. On my tape deck is says -12dB but on the Fostex it says about -48dB. Is this how it should be? Any help appreciated!

i can tell you this - the trim has no effect when going line in
what are you using to playback the originals? is it poss the line out is based on a volume knob (like the fr2le) where you can be seeing the signal level of the actual recorded info but the output is turned down and so its not actually outputting that same signal strength

I'm using a Yamaha KX-493 tape deck, works great. None of the controls (e.g. "play trim") seem to change this.
Do you guys have experience with running the FR-2le like this? I want to transfer a lot of lps and tapes.
Thanks.

I just ran my FR2LE off a Yamaha sound board balanced line out into 1/4 jack into the deck. No issues what so ever. Do you have the FR2LE set to "input" and not "mic"?
Also building off what was said earlier, make sure you Amp/receiver does not have some variable out put.

Seems like the output from my tape deck may just be quiet then. Output from my phono preamp is higher. I'll have to raise the levels with Audacity I guess.

I ran a phono preamp > FR2LE and my levels were a little low. Maxed out around -10db. I just bumped it up in post.
