Title: Netbooks?
Post by: phanophish on April 06, 2009, 01:16:59 PM
Anyone else picked one up?

I just grabbed an Acer Aspire One and gotta say the thing blows me away.

120GB drive, 1GB RAM, windows XP, honestly it does everything I have asked of it and is really not a bad performer.  The whole thing weighs about 2 pounds and is very small.  Great FLAC playback, Wav editing, FTP, even not bad for basic photo editing.  I'm very much impressed and for $239 to boot!

I have a eee PC 1000H.  Even with 2gb of RAM it's a little slow on processing 24/96 audio, but that is to be expected with the processer.  The latest ones look awesome compared to mine, they have a flush battery with a higher capacity.  If mics/stand attract drunk talkers by a factor of 2x then I am sure using my Netbook to tape would increase that to a factor of 4x-6x.  My plan was to Netbook tape, but I could never figure out a good way to do splits recording at 24/96.

I have an Aspire One in my arsenal as well - unfortunately, my attempts to record with my E-MU 0404 USB all end up with clicks and pops, no matter what I do. It's still a neat little machine, but if you're planning to record with it, make sure that it will work with whatever interface you're using. If I could be sure that a UA-25EX, Fast Track Pro, or other interface would do a better job, I'd consider getting it.

Note that my laptop troubles have also occurred with other machines as well (a ThinkPad T30, and a Dell Inspiron with a Core 2 Duo), so it isn't lack of CPU power that has bedeviled my laptop recording efforts...

I picked up a Samsung NC10 and like it so far. I get around 6 hours with the screen at a minimum and wifi on. I dont have a UA5 anymore and am not sure if there is a good SPDIF or AES>USB in option so I haven't tried recording to it yet.

I've had an MSI Wind netbook for about a year. I love it because of the form factor. The keyboard is a bit small, but you get used to it.

Have you tried OS X on it yet?
