Title: Sony M1 DAT vs iRiver H140 vs Roland R-09

I already have a M1 and the iRiver...I love using the iRiver for ease of use, and long recording times (both HD size, and batteries) but I still think the M1 has a little better sound...(Is it just me? or is it what I've recorded...only 3 shows with the iRiver)

Would the R-09 be a better choice? I want to switch to a Solid State recorder, and don't mind spending the $$ on the Roland, but is it that much better than the iRiver that I already own?

Get the newer R-09HR model.  It's one of the favorite solid state recorders on this board in its price range.

I still have my old M1, but it's a museum piece now.

Frankly, I didn't notice any change in sound going from the M1 to the H140.

The "better sound" could be attributed to your battery box with roll off (If you're using rolloff, I'm assuming since it's listed in your sig). Battery boxes are typically made with capacitors specific to a recorders input impedance. Depending on the battery box you are using, recordings on the iRiver might sound a lot thinner (or bassier) than the PCM-M1.

I had that issue when I first tried using my iRiver...there was absolutely no bass in the recording. I found out afterwards that my battery box that rolled off on the PCM-M1 at 85Hz/-3db rolled off at 400Hz/-3db (!) on my iRiver. I upgraded to a Church ST-9100 preamp awhile ago and recordings done on my iRiver rival those done on the PCM-M1. What battery box are you using?

Any recommendations on a battery box less than $100 that would work with a iRiver and a 1/8 inch plug mics? I have a feeling my current battery box is causing some other issues too.

I guess the preamp stage on your M1 is better than on the Iriver, which could have attributed to your disappointment.

For $100, you can even get a used 9000/9100 preamp with a bit of luck.
Then you won't have to rely on the Iriver gain.
