Title: Super Clamp to Extension Pole connection?
Post by: taylorc on April 13, 2009, 12:04:31 PM
Looking for a reliable piece to attach a Manfrotto Extension Pole 099B to a Manfrotto Super Clamp 2909:

Any suggestions?

I do basicallly what you are asking with these studs... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546377-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_036_14_036_14_Standard_Stud_for.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546377-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_036_14_036_14_Standard_Stud_for.html)

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546381-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_036_38_036_38_Standard_Stud_with.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546381-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_036_38_036_38_Standard_Stud_with.html)

I also drilled and tapped my superclamp on four sides so the stud can be threaded in and used in different directions.

Do you have the two items you linked to? Have you tried using the stud up in the pole and tightening down on it?
That would be the easiest way to mount it, don't you think?

Either of these should do the trick:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546373-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_042_042_Extension_Arm_with.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546442-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_203_203_Extension_Arm_for.html

I use the first one with the exact extension pole you linked to. Works great, but I had to modify the stud on the extension arm. The stud has hex shaped edges, which allow it to only be used in set positions. By simply grinding down the corners to create a round stud, you can rotate it 360 degrees and set it in any postition you need.

Im not sure if the second link has a round or hex stud, but Im sure the same modification would do the trick if it was hexed. This extension though doesnt extend as far out from the superclamp as my first link.

OH, RIGHT. I use a that stud and it allows you to get a little further up in the pole than what comes with the superclamp.

Thanks for the responses...

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546373-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_042_042_Extension_Arm_with.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546373-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_042_042_Extension_Arm_with.html)

I assume the arm on the 042 is narrow enough to be inserted into the extension pole?  That has been the issue thus far - finding something threaded on one end and long & narrow enough on the other to provide a connection and support for the extension pole.

taylor is this for the balcony at workplay? if so, your best bet is one or two flex arms connected to the super clamp. works like a charm.

Yeah, I have the flex arms.  Great piece.
The extension pole is for clamping to seats/armrests.

The (removable, gold-colored) stud end of the 042 (left side of the picture at B&H) should fit inside the extension arm.  The fixed (grey) hex stud end (right side of the B&H pic) should fit in the SuperClamp, but I don't know if it will fit in the extension arm (might not be deep enough before the hex gets in the way).

Also, if you don't want to grind down the fixed stud's hex edges to provide for free rotation in the SuperClamp slot, you might consider the 203 Extension Arm for Mini Clamp (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546442-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_203_203_Extension_Arm_for.html).  FWIW, I use it with my SuperClamp.  Allows free rotation of the arm when I insert the fixed-stud end into the SuperClamp and has the same flexibility / removable stud on the other end.  The arm is slightly shorter, though, 4.72" v. the 042's 6".

I really don't like those studs because it is hard to very strongly connect to the tapered part of that stud.  I would recommend just a simple double sided 5/8" stud like this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/93356-REG/Giottos_080565_Reversible_5_8_Mounting_Stud.html (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/93356-REG/Giottos_080565_Reversible_5_8_Mounting_Stud.html)

And if you need an angled connection, you can attach this to the super clamp (need two of the above studs then):

The extension pole is evidently designed solely for what it's described as - to extend a stand/pole.  As opposed to a standalone pole to be mounted to a clamp.

In other words there doesn't seem to be anything made by Manfrotto that is intended for this purpose... to provide a threaded connection on one end and enough length, versatility and "catch" on the opposite end for securing the pole to it.

Thanks again for the comments.

The double-ended stud does just that:  it provides a secure connection to the SuperClamp while at the same time providing a 5/8 stud onto which one securely attaches the extension.  The double-ended stud has the same connection configuration as the top of a Bogen stand:  5/8" stud + 1/4" or 3/8" threaded tip.  So attaching the extension to the double-ended stud is no different, connection-wise, than attaching it to the top of a stand.

I may have been misjudging the size (diameter) of the double-ended stud.  At first glance, it seemed too large for the extension pole to slip onto.

The hex heads on the stud that comes with the super clamp are slightly too wide for the extension pole to slip onto it.

I put the hex end into the super clamp and simply use the other end to insert into the extension pole.

For clamping to seats, rails ect. I use a quick release clamp:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/252212-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_649_Quick_Action_Release_Clamp.html

with the above mentioned extension pole:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546540-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_099B_3_Section_Extension_Pole_35_.html

The rod in the clamp fits into the bottom of the extension pole fairly tight.

another excellent and more secure option.
remember 92" is pretty high and for your pole to only be supported at ONE point 92" below, it will sway a little.

why not mate two super clamps and use one to hold the pole while the other grips the mounting point?

i use the 99b and the superclamp. as has been said, the 013 stud fits inside of the pole, which has a screw to bear down on the stud...

you could also do what lil kim just suggested, though that requires two superclamps (you can use the same 013 stud to mate them, and have full 360 degree adjustability)...

i will post have posted a pic of the superclamp/099b combo in a bit below...

very sturdy. if there was a problem(and there really wasn't) was the table - not the clamp/pole...

make sure that clamp comes with the plug for flat surfaces...

You might want to note that you do not have to order the flat plate additionally, they come with the superclamp.  It is mounted on the back side but easy to miss if you don't know it is there and haven't used this clamp before.  You can see it in the picture:

actually - the plug is in that picture in your link, but if you dont know what you are looking for, you would likely miss it. if you can wait, order the clamp, it should come with the plug. if it does not, then you can always order the plug later...

just a word to those buying the supercalmp new - check out the quick action one, it is really sweet.
