Title: Phase Issue - balance vs unbalanced
Post by: todd e on April 16, 2009, 10:24:12 AM
So i used some new cables last night from m248 to mini-me (thanks to kirkd)
they were rca > 1/4" unbalanced

the recording levels are great, and i'm happy with the sound, but the phase scope in wavelab is flat and i was in the OTS.  the image should be anything but flat...
they are in phase with each other, but somethings strange.  any ideas on a fix?

tried inverting phase and nothing changed.  i'm used to seeing flat line, Up and down, when i get a mono source from the SBD, but have never seen a flat phase scope image side to side.  thanks.

EDIT: the cables are fine, the mini-me is fucked up with the 1/4" jacks.  time to send into apogee, damn

When you say you inverted, did you do both channels, or one? Sounds like you either need to invert just the right, or just the left, not both.

trying that, but unfortunately the recording is mono based on a problem with our mini-me.  strange enouhg the XLR input part of the jack works, but the 1/4" doesnt create a stereo recording

FWIW - I tape at a venue where I can get a SBD tap.  The fellow who does the sound runs mono out of both sides and inverts one channel.  I think he is too lazy to pan-pot the spots to where they are and run stereo.  So I have to flip one channel just to get mono.  Plenty weird.  And, they are not exactly the same the two mono channels.  I do run mics, too, so I get OK sound and use the SBD as a fill.  I do not know if thios helps, but it is an example of the weirdness that can come out of a SBD.

Cheers

If you wanna post a snippet or PM one to me, I'd be happy to take a look for ya.
