Title: Schoepsperts: 4v & 4 -> 722 roll off config?
Post by: Bri on April 20, 2009, 04:30:25 PM
Updated my firmware on the 422 and am looking forward to dusting off the skopes this summer. I reset the thing to factory defaults, but did not take note of the HP filter settings that I though would be good.

My questions is, what's a good HP setting for the open back 4v's in XY? I think they have a pretty fat bottom if they are not filtered. And the 4's in ORTF? I'll be running them right into the 722...

Any feedback appreciated, hope to see some of you at some shows!
Bri

Options are:
40, 80, 160, 240 Hz @ 12/18/24 dB/oct
are there pics of the slope?

Personally I always run without any filters. I like to be able to capture as much as possible on location. Then, afterwards, with good listening, calmly, I can postprocess at home.

Same goes for setting of volumes. On location I always run very conservative levels, leaving plenty of room upwards. Flickering yellows, no reds. At home, calm again, I can add gain, compress, limit, whatever suits.

The good thing about capturing raw is that all changes afterwards are undoable. I lose a little in added noise, but with 24 bit recording on the SD 7xx there is plenty of space down to the noise floor.

But YMMV ass they say.

True, I have never recorded across 24 bits, maybe that extra bandwidth will give me an opportunity to diffuse the low end in post.

Thanks for the feedback! You got my mind moving!

I'm with ghellquist:  record 24-bit, peak fairly low (I usually aim for -12 dB peaks, but then again most of the stuff I record has limited dynamic range, so that's plenty safe), and deal with HPF in post where I may customize it to my liking.

Same as above: 24 bit, low level, no filter.  You can always take out unwanted bottom end in post.  Cards, even the 4v's, have less bottom end than omnis.  I never run a filter on omnis either.

Do you guys attenuate the mic input? I think there is a high/low setting, it's been so dang long!

Depends.  Acoustic: normal.  Death Star metallic: low.  Jump ball for anything in between.  You can always make it louder.
