After many years of attending gigs I've decided to start taping.
I've already decided to purchase an edirol R09 so I'm now looking for mic advice.
I am in Ireland and we don't get many taper friendly bands here so most of my taping with be stealth.
I've been perusing a few threads here and based on a lot favourable comments I am leaning towards Church Audio mics.
Any particular mics I should be checking out? Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Depends on the budget obviously, but for under $500.00 you won't find a better sounding stealthable mic than that made by Chris Church.

Thanks for posting.
any particular mic? Would you recommend a pre-amp as well?

I love my Church Audio mics and Preamp, although I am sure they would work just fine with a Battery box and (in some situations) with plug-in power on th R-09.
If you check out the UK Tapers thread over in Tour information (I know you are not technically UK but.....) you will see what others in this part of the world are running.
Enjoy your expensive new hobby.
Dave.

A few of the most popular low profile mics are listed below. You should check out Live Music Archive and search for samples of these with and without preamps. Decide for yourself what sounds acceptable to you. I'm thinking that you'll discover the sound of the CA-14 > 9100 > R-09HR is the best sounding combination...hands down.
CA-11
CA-14
AT-853 (including variations and alias's such as Sound Professionals SP-CMC-04)
EDIT: A higher price alternative to add to the list is the DPA-4060.

I just recently took the plunge and started running CA-11 > 9100 > R-09HR. I couldn't be happier with them. I would suggest the pre myself, for a few extra bucks, it's well worth it. I'll still run my 4060's the majority of what I'm taping, but these will get a ton of use as well I'm sure. They have my vote for bang for buck value.
Definetly go look in the retail section here for deals, not sure what Chris is running right now.

CA-14's come in two flavors, omni and cardioid. I'd recommend the cards for what you are doing but that's just me. I'd recommend coupling them with the CA-9100 preamp, or if you want super small, the CA-UGLY preamp. The CA-UGLY is the same basic circuit minus a few features (LED's, etc) but some folks don't like the way you have to adjust the gain.
I've tested both flavors of the CA-14's and they are great mics for the money. I personally own the CA-11's and a CA-9000 preamp and they do a good job but I'd recommend spending the few dollars extra and getting the better gear.

I'm rolling with both CA-14's and CA-11's Card & Omni > 9100 > R09HR and couldn't be happier. For the price, nothing compares. His service is also top shelf. Go for it. You know you want to.
