Im kinda thinking about trying this
I have a mixpad already and a Pair of Mk012's, Im thinking of Buying a Used UA-5 from a friend (he used for his band) I feel comfy I can digi mod it myself
From what I have read and heard A stock Ua-5 sound's bit Weak, and with the Oktava's could sound a bit weird with too much Mid , and so on. So My ? is,
what about if I ran the Mixpad out in front of it, so that I could adjust the input on the High's and low's so to speak,
Do ya think this would help, or Just be a chance for more prob's in the chain?

I guess if you did that, youd only be using the UA5 as an A>D converter, because I dont think youd want to run the mics through 2 pres. You'd probably want to run either mics>UA5 or mics>Mixpad>AD, because there are probably better AD converters for the money (I know there are 2 GP ADCs in the yardsale) Just a thought...

My advice is to either keep the mixpad and find just an ADC. You really dont want to run two pres. Id say grab a UA-5 (they have too much phluff in my opinion) or find a DMIC-20, i think those are the better pre ADC combos. Or you could get a SBM-1 and run that with the mixpad. I think the SBM-1 would be the best, but more expensive than anything else.

If it were me, I'd skip/sell the Mixpad and go with the UA5. A few reasons I personally wouldn't go with Mixpad > ADC:
[1] I'm mostly a fan of less gear = fewer hassles with minimal, if any, compromise on sound (depending on gear combos, of course)
[2] I don't think the Mixpad sounds much, if any, better than the UA5 pre
[3] I'm not a big fan of the standalone ADCs out there, namely:
- AD500 (sound great, but old and unreliable)
- ADC-20 (great detail but bright/harsh and digital sounding to my ears)
- SBM-1 (stock not better enough than the D100/M1 ADC to warrant the cash, and for the same price you get the much more flexible UA5)
- modSBM-1 (my favorite of the bunch, but a bit pricey - I'd upgrade mics before picking one up)
Reasons why I personally would go with the UA5:
[1] sounds good with the Oktavas if you're considering those mics - should be plenty of recordings around to give 'em a listen
[2] I prefer the UA5s ADC to the readily available inexpensive ADCs (see above)
[3] upgradable: digi and preamp mods from Oade if purchased direct - or DIY if you're especially handy at such things (FWIW, members of this board were split about 50/50 during blind testing between warm-mod UA5 and V3)
[4] Much broader feature set to allow you to grow into the hobby:
- 16- or 24-bit
- selection of sample rates
- variable gain
- ability to run AUD + SBD or 3-mic mix
- both optical and coax output providing flexibility in recording devices (e.g. DAT, JB3)
FWIW, the UA5 gets "fluffed" a lot because it's probably the best price/performance value in pre/ADCs for our application right now.

Thank's for all the reply's..
I think I will check into the Oade Ua-5 , and then I can allway's go for a Wmod or Pmod later,
Thank's again.

just remember, you can only get oades to mod a ua-5 purchased from them.. they keep the serial numbers of the units they sell.
-
Ya I knew you had to buy from them,
Does anyone know of the top of there head what the Digimod Ua-5 runs from Oade?
Im thinking about $325-350
-
you dont have to have them do the digimod to do other mods :-)
-
Right on, I just figured it would have to be done by them aswell.
So what are they gonna get me for a stock Ua-5? $300.00????
I seen the Mod's are about another hundred buck's . Im kinda like the sound of the Wmod , But have been told that it may be too boomy for the oktava's.
Thank's for the input .

i say go for the warm mod, if you dont like it with the oktavas be sure that you will upgrade anyways soon enough :-) join the gear sluts!
-
FWIW, i believe either the warm or pmod ua5's come w/ the didgi-mod anyhoo, so ya might not wanna spend $$ on the digi-mod, ya might as well save up and do the warm or presence mod, the digi mod comes w/ it 8)

even Better, So I guess I'll wait till I can afford the whole kit and caboodle ,
