Title: HELP : PMD620 vs. R-09HR vs. H2 ?
Post by: nak700s on May 10, 2009, 05:34:36 PM
Didn't someone post an easy comparison of these three recorders?

A friend just bought me a Zoom H2 and I really didn't want this particular recorder.  I was wondering what the differences were between it and the Edirol R-09HR and the Marantz PMD620.  Can anybody help me before I put tail between legs and ask him where he got it in the hopes of exchanging it for a different one?

Not to belabor the same question, but if there is anyone that is familiar with the three recorders mentioned, I would appreciate the help.  I know very little about the H2 and the 620 and have a little experience with the R-09, any help would be great.  Thanks  :-\

Well, here I go again. I never learn and I know I'll be slammed for this, but, hey, that's what this site is about: opinions.
A word of criticism about a piece of gear does not mean a personal attack to it's owner.
That being said, I was one of the first TS members to get the PMD-620. Not a bad machine at all, don't take me wrong. But IMHO the R-09HR is a better machine, producing more fuller/warmer/clearer sounding recordings. Proof of that is the fact that there are way more
R-09HR ( or R-09) users here than PMD-620's.  ;)
My 0.000002 cents.

Thank you for responding.  I appreciate your 2 cents, that's why I'm asking.

Do you know anything about the Zoom H2?  As mentioned, I just received one as a gift.  Although I don't want to be insulting and ask where it came from in hopes of exchanging it, I will if it won't perform the way I need it to.

Can't help you with the H2, friend. Don't know nothing about it, sorry about that.
Enjoy recording!

Here are a couple of other possibilities that might be worth considering…They are a bit more expensive than the ones you listed, though (~$100 more).

The first is the Oade Concert Mod PMD620.  Sounds awesome, in my opinion, and has an uncluttered layout (both physically and on the screen), nice tactile buttons (and one-touch recording), sufficient plug-in power for most small mics, decent build quality, very good battery life, and an interesting preset system.  Downsides are that Oade removes the built-in mics (which may or may not be an issue) and the modification voids the factory warranty.

The other is the Sony PCM-D50.  I have had a few opportunities to play around with one, and it is pretty sweet.  Very solid build and it sounded great in the home tests I did with it (but I have never recorded a concert with one).  I have read a lot of positive comments from people that own/use one, and, although bigger than the others, it is not as big as I thought it would be (definitely “low-pro”-able).  Also has decent plug-in power, optical in/out, built-in memory (4 GB, I think), and excellent battery life.

As for the H2, well, in my opinion, any of the above would be a step up!  On mine, the mic input was pretty noisy, and I didn’t like the gain control (or lack thereof)…

Thanks.  I emailed my friend and asked him to tell me where he bought it in hopes of making an exchange.  I'm still not positive which one I would want yet, but I do know I don't want the Zoom H2.  Aside from all the inherent problems everyone speaks about, the display is simply to dam small for me!  I love the Tascam DR-100, but it's a little bigger than I wanted and the price is still to high for me right now.  I'm currently leaning towards the Edirol R-09HR.  Any more feedback is welcome...
