Title: I got an MK-8 Cap....what now?
Post by: edtyre on May 12, 2009, 03:26:24 PM
My next few open taping shows i'm going to run an m/s pair
along with my regular stereo pair pretty close to the stage
(10 rows back)

I was going to run mk-4's along with an mk2 & mk8
The thinking here is the omni would increase the bass a little.
My only other options are running mk-41's with an mk-4 and the mk-8
or borrow an mk-21 cap and use the 4's.

Still not sold on 4 channel mic recordings after doing a few myself
and listening to many other tapes. 4 channel for me is usually my basic pair
and then a pair of whatever i'm experimenting with that week.  8)

I'd run mk21/mk4 with the mk8 and run the 41s as backup

BTW - Are u going to be running indoors or outdoors?

MK4 + MK8 midside, + split omnis. you can also try MK41 + MK8 if you are way back. either way, put the omnis on the outside.

I'd go directional with the M.  I think if you use an omni, you are stuck with a mic angle of 180* but can change the pattern from omni > subcard > card depending on your mix.

Correct, thats one of the advantages of the subcards, is that you get close to the omni pattern, but you can still get some directional tweaking out of it in post.

I'd run mk21/mk4 with the mk8 and run the 41s as backup

That would be my suggestion as well.

If you want to bank on your M/S setup being correct, depending on the mount used, you could stack a 41 on the bottom, the 8 above that, the 21 above that, and the omni above that. The caps are small enough that if you don't use a windscreen, I don't think you would get much of an issue with the spacing of the omni to the 8. At Hampton we stacked LDs one night in a similar fashion to this and it didn't introduce major phase issues.

edit: if I was going to do this, I'd use a kwon/louie-style MS bar for it and not a delivered setup (I know on a neumann MS mount, there isn't a way to stack caps). Probably take some tweaking anyway, but it's an interesting idea to play with (IMHO).

What about double Mid-Side?

What about double Mid-Side?

Coming up with a way to mount the mics for this is the nosebleed that has me stopped.  I have the gear but have not figured out how to put the mics together.  It would be a lot easier if I did it the Schoeps way: 2 Mk4V's + a Mk8.  With two Mk4's it is ugly.

When trying to come up with a three-mike setup for double M/S, don't forget that the figure-8 capsule can be used "vertically" or "horizontally" or even in between. The flat tip of the capsule can face forward, upward or diagonally, as long as left is still left (0° axis/red dot) and right is still right (180° axis/black dot).
