I tried a recording yesterday at a loud Rock show in an arena.
using Core Sound Stealth Cardioids and with the Battery Box.
I had to turn the Recording Level Knob all the way up and it only peaked at like -40db. that's nowhere near the -12db that others recommend when recording.
I've had to use software to pump up the volume. I set the software to add 18db and created a new WAV file. The new file now averages around -12db throughout the playing.
But my question is am I doing something wrong when I'm at the show? or do I just have to keep recording shows at this low volume, and pump up the volume when I get home with software?

What recorder were you using? Were you running line-in or mic-in? Some recorders need a very hot signal to the line-in, in which case you need to either use a preamp instead of a battery box, or run bbox -> mic-in.
Though there are rare exceptions, preamp -> line-in is usually the better bet.

Sony PCM-D50 recorder, LINE IN
never seen a preamp for stealth recording and I need to use the battery box the came with the Mics because it has a specific connection plug so that they only work together with each other.
I've read that Line-in has less noise, that's why I chose it.
Also I read about Clipping or Brickwalling (not sure of the correct term) when using Mic-in instead of Line-in.
Kind of afraid to use Mic in, because for years I used a D100 DAT, Line-in with Sound Professionals mics and Battery Box. one recording I used Mic-in instead and I had distortion, from then on I used Line-in.

Get a Church Audio preamp, he should be able to give you the connection you need.

IF your mics are that insensitive USE MIC-IN.
According to guysonic who tested the D50, everything below 2.5 on the gain-wheel results in overloading the internal preamp.
In other words: use mic-in and adjust the levels with the wheel on the D50 and IF your are below 2.5 on the gain-wheel for peaks around -12db on the levelmeter, switch to LINE-IN where you need more internal gain from the D50 preamp.
And don't forget to switch to the 20db-setting on the left side of the D50, which makes the MIC-input 20db less sensitive.

Yes , with the Core-Sound Stealthy cardioid you need the mic in. I am a Core sound user for 11 years now and have used different recorders. Every recorder I needed to use the mic in input. Line in never worked.
Make sure when you use the mic in you need to set the sense to LOW or -20 DB , whatever that is called on your recorder.
Oh , and did you put a new battery in your batterybox ? I once was running an older almost empty battery and did get a much lower volume.
