I'm looking to upgrade my C4's and so far plan on going with the Peluso CEMC6 mics. On SoundPure they go for about $585 a pair. What else is comparable to the Peluso mic's in price and quality? Thanks.

there are quite a few options in the $600 range. The first three that come to my mind are a used pair of AKG 460 or beyerdynamic mc930. both are great mics. if you are willing to go large diaphragm ADK TLs are also nice mics that offer 4 mic pattern options that I'd put in roughly the same class as peluso. Each set of mics has their own group of fans and some will say that their mic of choice is far better than any of the others I've listed. So I'm sure someone will disagree with all three choices I listed. Your best bet is to research some mics in that price range and spend a few weeks downloading as many FLAC sources off archive.org as you can find for each and do some critical listening. If you have one specific setting in which you plan to use them most often look for sources that are similar. So if you plan to always run on-stage for an acoustic jazz groups look for on stage sources. If you plan to use them for various stuff then try to find sources in various different settings (indoor, outdoor, on-stage, FOB, OTS) and get a feel for how they sound in those settings. Use your ears, and decide what you like.

in terms of best performing mics (IMO)
1. the AKG 460. hard to go wrong. you can acquire multiple caps
2. M-Audio Pulsar IIs. cheap, and def. better sounding than the C4s.
3. the Peluso kit is very nice. all the caps sound good.
4. AT 4xxx series. very nice and clean sounding mics. Fairly neutral.

Thanks for the info guys. I plan on listening to a bunch of recordings before purchasing, I'm not in a hurry. Just wanted to get ideas from this forum before just doing random searches on the internets.

Consider the Busman BSC1's. You get 4 pairs of capsules. I went from the SP C4's to these and have no regrets.

Busman is also looking good to me. I think they will be my next purchase. I was looking at the Audix 1280's, but I think the Busman seems to be a better buy, for the $.

i will recommend the AT4051s - you can get them new right now on closeout at MF for $299 each (4051a's) - i have owned DPA 4011s, schoeps cmc64s, gefell m300s, km184s, c481s and 461s, and the AT4051s are some of my favorite mics ever. as mentioned, the 481s and 461s are also wonderful mics - i have used them for years, and they are very very good. the beyer mc930s are also nice, but i do prefer 4051s, 461s and 481s.

If I were buying a SDC today, I think I would try something from audix, perhaps the SCX-1, or 1280's.....
I like Nick's suggestion of the AT4051/53 or 460...
Peluso cemc6 is not my taste (esp the card cap).

So far I've listened to a bunch of recordings made with the Peluso mic's and like them. Next I'm gonna hunt down some recordings with the AT4051's and the busman mics. I'm trying to find recordings made with a PMD660 ACM since its the same unit I run. I know it doesn't matter that much but I listen to those first if I can find them.
