Title: New Zoom recorder does video too
Post by: Ozpeter on July 18, 2009, 09:31:37 PM

Seems like this is an audio recorder with added video rather than a video recorder with added audio.

[Edit - heh, I now see that this is fairly old news, though not mentioned here before according to my search]

But it's not HD video!

I agree completely.

What good is HD Video with the mediocre sound that most HD Video cams produce? I'd much rather have standard definition video with very good audio. SD video is good enough for me anyway. It's substandard audio I can't deal with.

I have 3 HD camcorders and I hardly use them to film HD because I dont have enough memory to store the data. For me it's a waste unless I have a HUGE harddrive to store the HD footage. I think 2 hr footage is like 40 or 50GB of data?

AVCHD video is about an hour on 8GB memory card (depending on bit rate used).

I think this zoom might start sort of a new easy audio-video era. After all the zoom h4 has been one of the first pocket recorder, followed by a lot of others (often better).
The most interesting aspect -to me-of this product is that it seems that it has a special eye on audio, which is the great issue with camcorders  now. It's rare to have a mic input on consumer camcorders, and never there is a line input.
Sure the audio quality of this zoom will be better than camcorders'; I'm curious to see wether this thing has an external line/mic input.

I think that having a good external mic preamp now might be the best choice to make, as there soon will be other new pieces of (video)recording gear which will need a good sound.

The chief thing that stuffs camcorder sound is the unswitchable auto level control - or if there is an alternative, it's too hard to use in terms of metering and monitoring.  I've recently bought a Panasonic GH1 still/video hybrid camera, which takes gobsmacking video, but although there's a stereo mic socket with plugin power, its ALC makes it hard to take seriously.

Last week went to an African Guitar outdoor concert taking both my HD audio rig AND a low cost Lumix Panasonic DMC-FX12 with VGA resolution 30fps video.

Found the video quality almost excellent even in low light AND the optical-digital stabilization extraordinary.  Even in 3X zoom mode no shake and looked to have not been handheld (using one hand mostly!) but tripod-like very smooth easily enjoyable viewing for long time periods.

Camera's audio wasn't too bad either!  So I now feel VGA is satisfying ONLY WITH low light/effective stabilization type camera gear.

Now to marry the HD audio with the video as I'm learning to hopefully accomplish with a cheap Corel video program's 30 day trial program.

The raw 139MEG mov video clip taken (all in 3X zoom mode) downloadable at: www.sonicstudios.com/African Guitar Concert.mov.MOV (http://www.sonicstudios.com/African Guitar Concert.mov.MOV)

Er - no.  The GH1 is a remarkable device - I have one - but there is no control over audio levels (or display of levels or monitoring output) at all.  Cinema quality video, camcorder quality sound.

Is there a small SD consumer camcorder that has mic-in and mic vol control using solid state?

Who cares, it's HD audio!  :)

Totally well though out product, should get in the youtube generation who care about audio quality on their podcasts.

And to be honest it would be cool to record a video at the same time as your audio...all in the same nice ~ sized package as the R09HR
