I'm amazed that Apple overlooked this. Yes I know, it doesn't play 24-bit files, or flac files, but 4GB of space is still enough for me as a portable listening device, usually in noisy environments.
Gapless playback can't happen currently on the latest iPod Shuffle, software version 1.1. It talks, but it can't play a live album or DJ mix properly, as the artists intended?
If this bothers you as it does me, drop Apple a line at:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipodshuffle.html
and hopefully they can push a fix out in a firmware update.

Nano 4G does it fine... maybe the shuffle makes it less usefull?

Less useful? I have 4GB of space, more than enough for a few live shows, classical recordings, whatever.
Anyway yes, for the record, the other iPods, the iPhone, etc. do gapless playback fine. The problem is just with the Shuffle.

i dont think they got gapless until the 5th or 6th gen of ipods. not sure how that correlates with the shuffle/nano series

I'm sure it's the firmware space, they couldn't build in a buffer. Maybe time to get a new shuffle.

Some of it happens in an iTunes calculation when copying to the device.. says so right on the screen
Can a Shuffle play an album straight-through or does it, uh, .."shuffle" ;D
