Just the omni's that I recently received distort. I know the "Church" mod is recommend for the 853 series and now I can hear why. After recording two rock concerts, both distorted. At first, I thought it was because I was using a pre-amp, but they distort with just a battery box. My lineage tonight was AT U853 (omni) > CA Battery Box > R-09HR (line in gain at 40).
Never had issues though with the cardioid or hyper caps.

i can't speak to your particular lineage but i when i bought mine i got them with the nady adapters/ultra low-sens mod + denecke ps-2, and they have never, ever distorted on me with that setup.

Don't yours have the cardioid caps though?

yeah mine are the cards. my buddy nameloc01 (he's supposedly deleted his account, but he's lurking around here somewhere) has the u853 omni caps (as well as the card caps) and i dont think he's ever experienced distortion with the omnis, but he's got the same ultra low sens/phantom power mod i do...and he runs them either into a PS-2 with the nadys or the AT8532s with just the mini-XLRs. maybe it's whatever preamp/battery box you're using that's causing the problem.

At first I thought it was the 9100 pre, but then to distort with a battery box when the recorder is at unity gain. ? Just plan strange. I think I'd benefit from the 4.7k mod.
I have an order in for CA-14 omni mics. Those will likely be fool-proof.
