Title: Ever Run AB?
Post by: newplanet7 on August 30, 2009, 07:41:13 PM
Just wondering what people think of running this way for PA.
Also wondering if anyone has run cards AB.
Don't recall ever hearing a recording in this set-up.
Well besides omnis.

Yes - if I am doing a PA stack tape, I run A-B.  Here is a link to a John Mayer tape I ran A-B cards.  I also ran hypers A-B last night for ABB.

Hai Rory.
How far back is the ABB Band Tape?
Also what length of spread?
I'll have to grab it.
I will be 40ft? from the stage.
I usually am never that far back because the biggest name I tape is MMW.
However, I would think the only thing stereo that far back
is the room sound. No stage sound.

The John Mayer I was back about 40 ft.  About 25 ft. back last night at ABB.

correct, generally all you get is room sound in stereo and phase cancelation (which can give the effect of stereo) from the stacks. I've taped a couple things that are in true stereo in the field before, but not many.

I know someone here in Richmond that tapes A-B style (or close to it) almost exclusively with DPAs, spaced about 20cm or so. He swears by it. I've heard some tapes in large arenas done a similar fashion and it's different, but I wouldn't call it "bad" per se.

running a-b with pa systems is okay and not that sensitive towards phase problems..most likely due to the wider dispersion of sound, than acousic non-amplified stuff.

just do it

Thanks fellas.
I figured you'd be able to shed some light.
I mostly get enjoyment out of taping smalle acts where
location is unlimited.
I've taped MMW about 10 times maybe.
I haven't been this far back except for 2-22-08 in portsmouth NH
However I ran din and it smoked.

I've been running A-B the last two, maybe three years.  My Tampa tape from this year sounds pretty good, I think, considering how far back it was.  I don't think A-B vs DIN would have made much of a difference in my case.

I ran A-B the last DMB show I taped and it came out great. Very full sounding.

When I use to my the SP and CA mics I would ways run A-B.
