Title: audix 1280/1290. Cards or Hypers?
Post by: nicegrin on September 01, 2009, 06:53:57 PM
I´m abit curious about the audix 1280/1290 mic.
Which capsules would you say is your favourite, the cards or the hypers?
Anyone who tried both and have a preference?

Thanks!

Don't have the hypers and I have no intentions of getting any.

I don't have any experiences with these Audix mics, but I would recommend listening to sources on archive.org to see which ones sound better to you.  There are quite a few with cardioid caps and I believe at least a few with hypers.  One phish souce recently on etree used hypers and sounded rather good.

I have the 1290 cards. I think they sound great. MTerry has the hypers, and he loves his. The only real difference is the polar pattern, obviously. I think the cards are better for general purpose stuff. Hypers are more directional, and can aid in reducing off axis noise.

The cards can sound a bit more natural, and have better bass response, but I probably end up using the hypers more often.  They always sound good to me.  The cards can sound great, or bleh if the acoustics aren't up to snuff.  I've never gotten home from a show regretting using hypers, but I have come home wishing I had.

I think hypers tend to get a bit of a bad rap because so many people see them as a mic of last resort, that they'll only use if forced into a subpar spot.  Try running them from the sweet spot some time, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Yep. I have enjoyed using my hyper's more than my old 480/ck61 set up. I've run the audix all summer in the Phish section, then at  800 capacity clubs or my local music club and never thought twice about doing so. I want to snag some card caps, but mainly for on-stage.

I taped the starlake phish show a rig or two down from mterry's audix hyper rig.  I was running hypers of a different brand so I was quite interested to hear his pull.  I was very impressed, those hypers sound amazing for such a small and directional microphone.    They are smaller and more low pro than my Rode NT6 "actives".  His recording and the discovery of Chris Church's new audix 1/8" cable made me really think hard about selling my rig.

Mark,

For onstage, you might wanna look at the omnis...

Too bad they don't make sub cards.

I gotta get the Church cables!!
