Gaffer tape leaves residue if you want to remove it later, and looks messy. There's some kind of smooth, rubbery tape that I have seen cables tied together with that was great but I don't know what exactly it is or what it's called. I couldn't un-tape it, but had to cut it off with an exacto knife, but it left no residue and the tape had a nice clean look when on the cables. Anyone know what kind of tape this is?

electric tape?

Gaffer tape leaves residue? That's news to me. Sorry I can't help on what you're looking for though. I love gaffers tape!

Gaffer tape wrapped around cables definitely leaves residue.

electric tape?
Hmm, I'll have to check it out, thanks for the input. 8)

are you sure it was taped and not heat shrink tubing?

What I remember is that it appeared that a black, smooth, tape-like strip was wrapped around the cables several times, but had melded together and couldn't be unwound (had to be cut off). I don't know what heat shrink tubing is but it seems possible based on the name (heat shrink)... I'll have to google electric tape and heat shrink tubing. Thanks for the input everyone. ;D

are you thinking of something like a silicone stretch-n-seal tape?

< looks like it is also marketed as "Rescue Tape" http://www.filmtools.com/rescuetape1.html >

3M makes a real professional electrical tape that is quite rubbery (not the cheap plastic $1 roll stuff). You can get it at Home Depot.

Ohhh... that looks very promising, I may have to order one of those. 8)

I'll check this one out too, thanks guys. ;D

That Nashua tape is probably what you want. In general, it is called cold shrink tape -- it doesn't have adhesive, so it can't leave a residue.
Here is another version:

Self amalgamating tape.
The use of "gaffer tape" or anything similar on electrical connectors should be avoided due to the residue it deposits. Over time, this degrades the electrical contacts, to the point where you lose connectivity.

Self amalgamating tape.
Yep. Or self-vucanizing tape:

I found one brand called Atomic Tape:

Huge thanks to everyone for the info and suggestions! These look like the exact kind of tape I was looking for... now I just have to pick one. :P

Were gonna see some new stuff coming out shortly. 3m was the first to develop a "No residue" Duct tape that we have been testing for a 2 years now. It can be left in direct sun for up to 6 months without leaving residue. (its on the market already) it is a great improvement to the Shurtape PC 667
Shurtape is not far behind in developing high strength no residue tapes so i assume they will implement this to the gaffers (PC 628) tape as well. Recently alot of engineers use the (FP 227) for marking there mic's and such. Its a paper based tape so its not rubbery feeling but has a very strong adhesive and removes clean on most substrates.

Thanks for the tip, it's funny because I drove 25 miles to an Ace Hardware that said they had this exact Tommy Tape in stock, only to find out once I got there that they didn't. I ended up ordering some similar silicone tape on Amazone for under $10 shipped for a 1" x 10' roll. :)

I'd like to tape some mic cables together, would love to hear a report on your efforts.

From the OP's description in the first post (except for the color - only seen it in white), it sounds alot like Teflon Tape. Plumbers use it for sealing pipe threads and it's cheap as hell. I've only ever seen it in about 1/2" width. You could certainly tie cables with it...
I don't seem to be able to insert a pic so....
