Title: AT 943 Omni's & Bass Rolloff?
Post by: taperwheeler on October 13, 2009, 10:10:31 AM
Will be running at943 omni's for the 1st time in a couple weeks.  Seated up front, very first row, pretty much right under a stack.  Likely running at943>ca-9100>mt2.

Any suggestions on whether-or-not to run the roll off on the 9100?

Thanks...

You'll probably be near some subs if you are that close.  Omni's are more sensitive to bass frequencies.  You might get bass overload at the capsule of which I am not sure if bass rolloff is going to be effective.  All depends on if this is a loud concert or not.

I'd bring card caps if you have them and tape the opener with omnis and see how you do. (if there's an opener)

It's a Ray LaMontagne show...so not so sure that there will be a lot of loud, heavy bass.  The venue isn't taper friendly...won't be able to check the recording from the opener.

Will be seated at the very front of the left hand section here.  http://www.ppacri.org/3Dseating/views/sec15.cfm

As long as the rolloff is gentle it probably won't HURT you to run it, but of course, you know the adage about "you can always take out, but you can't put back in."

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably run the rolloff, as long as it's not too steep a curve that Chris has programmed into it.  I've run those omnis and even when accidentally using too much rolloff, they sound great.

So in your opinion the omni's should be safe not to distort?  Just got them and hoped to run 'em.  Don't know of too many other occasions where I'll be in an ideal enuff position to run them (fear of chatter) other than close to the stacks with the exception of outside high and wide.  Thought I've read elsewhere where people do a lot of upfront stack taping with omni's.  Was hoping to find them useful in that way.

Do you have the 4.7k mod?  If so, then they DEFINITELY won't.  Even if they don't have the 4.7k mod, for Ray LaMontagne, I'd think you'd be fine.  Doesn't the 9100 have a 4.7k switch on it or something, too?

They do have the 4.7k mod.  The church 9100 has an 80 hz rolloff which I'm thinking I'll run.

In that case you are good to go.  I think 80Hz is a gentle enough rolloff that you may as well go with that, too.  I'm not sure how ear-blastingly loud it would have to be to distort them with the 4.7k mod, but I hope to never find out :)  And for sure, it won't be Ray LaMontagne who does that to you.

I have 853 omni's and those things distorted like crazy on my at a Styx show this past summer.  No 4.7k mod, which is why.  I was far back, FOB, but the show was crazy loud.

I have CA-14 omni's now, so I don't think they'll distort for loud shows. I haven't used them yet.

I've run them with 195hz rolloff and the recording still had plenty of bottom end, so I'd say you'll be fine with 80hz.
