Title: Nomad JB3 bit perfect test
Post by: Swanny on January 23, 2004, 05:40:39 PM
I did a bit perfect test the other night for the JB3. I ran AD1k AES>Coax>DA-P1 and AD1k optical>JB3. I then transferred DA-P1>Echo Mia>Audition & JB3 firewire. I lined the waves up at the begining of the set at maximum zoom, then scrolled to the end and they were still perfectly in line. The JB3 is bit perfect.

it may be bit perfect in your single test, but I suggest you do more testing. If often takes tens of hours to testing to see flaws in a setup.

also, your procedure does not test for misplaced samples, which is the nomads biggest flaw. just because they line up at the beginning and the end doesnt mean much.

How would I test for misplaced samples? I checked at various points in the set, but will continue testing...

these tests have already been done and the jb3 doesnt misplace or drop samples unless being used with a c02 or similar conversion boxes.

You want to actually compare the files.  Checking if they line up indicates that no samples have been dropped.  It doesn't tell you if the samples are the same.  If the wave is in 44.1, use EAC
Tools, Compare WAVs

You'll need to edit them first so they start and finish on the same sample.  You can do that easily in a multitrack view.

You can also copy one and paste-invert it onto the other one.  You should end up with absolutely nothing (though I believe if you clip, CEP handles the paste-invert by leaving misplaced samples at the clipping point).  You could try a mixdown in a multitrack environment.  Whatever is easier for you.

Dklein you did all the UA-5> JB3 tests didn't you?  T+ for that.

I know a test was already done, but I think the more we test things and get the same results the better... Maybe some who still don't see the JB3 as a good alternative will change thier minds. I wonder if it would be hard to mod to a mini coax?
