My two JB3's died recently and it would be nice to get away from the HOSA coax > optical box. I am looking for a smallish portable device with digital COAX I/O. I've heard bad things about the M-Audio Microtrack 2 and would like to hear from other users. Or can you recommend a simliar product with Digital COAX I/O.

i purchased one a few weeks ago. charged it when it arrived and 3 days later, after no use of the unit, it would hardly start up because the battery was dead. once i finally got a charge on it, it wouldn't read any cf card i put it in (some of which others have used w/the unit according to posts elsewhere). i sent it back in, got a refund, and got a D50, which i am so far VERY pleased with.
peace,

I really dig mine.

Mine has been Killer, I run it as a back up bit bucket. Internal battery at full charge has lasted an entire show, and then another hour or so playback on the ride home in the car. Was a deal on them on amazon a few weeks ago. Picked mine up for $163.00

No issues, I use it as a bit bucket. Also have used a recorder, but my 007 isn't too good.

I used one for a while, used it solely as a "bit bucket" (the analog inputs are very noisy) and had some good experiences with it, but also two recordings that were ruined by freeze-ups. One was in near-total darkness, where I was up in the balcony monitoring the whole time over headphones. The signals came through to the headphones and there was no audible or visible indication of trouble, but the recorder had stopped recording as I discovered when the lights came back on at the end. That's just not acceptable. The price is very nice, but I'd rather pay somewhat more and get a device that works reliably, or at least that lets you know when it has failed!
Perhaps I have a defective sample. When I tried to measure the 48 Volt phantom powering on the balanced analog inputs, I couldn't detect any DC voltage, but I've read that this has worked for some other people. Also, the countdown indicator that tells you how much time you have left on your memory card is always wrong by a lot. Maybe I should be grateful that the display is so small, it's nearly impossible to read.
All in all I get the impression that the manufacturer never put the needed resources into the development and testing of this product.

Is the general consensus that the Edirol R09 is a better unit all around? I wanted to go with the Microtrack II but the noise issues are really making me think twice about it.

Yes, definitely, as long as you don't need to use your recorder as a bit bucket for an external preamp with an on board analog to digital converter. People here say the HR's on board ADC is excellent.

Ditto. They one I used, for a very short while, had the same issue
from time to time. Could have been card related but I never took
the time to pin it down. Just moved to a different unit. The size
is nice but that's about it from my point of view.
