Title: SD 744T - Problem loading user settings?
Post by: davepeck on October 19, 2009, 03:32:01 PM
as some of you know, i recently had to part ways with my 744T, and after not getting any bites here, i sold it on ebay. the buyer has since contacted me with a problem loading user settings from a CF card, and i'm wondering if anyone here as any insight:

The 744T arrived today- thanks for the fast shipment.

Unfortunately, the unit froze up on me when I tried to load user
settings from a flash card. I had to pull the battery to get it to
power off. I then rebooted it, repaired the media and tried
again, only to get the same result.

Have you experienced similar problems with this unit? Could
this be fixed by loading the most recent firmware update?

i personally have zero experience loading/saving user settings, so i have never experienced this myself. could it be a firmware issue? the 744T i sold was at 2.54, but i see that they're now up to 2.63.

if anyone has any similar experience or insight, please share. i told the buyer i'd do some research and see what i could find. i believe he is contacting SD about it as well.

thanks,
dave

Whose user settings was he trying to load. Did you send it with a CF card that had user settings on it?? Was he trying to load settings from a different unit onto the 744?? If so, was it the same model or possibly 702/722??

I hazard a guess and suggest that if it was from a previous model,, there may be problems.

no, as i said, i don't have any experience with saving/loading user settings, so this is a card that he had. not sure if it was from another 744T or from a different model - i'll find out.

are you saying that other SD 7XX recorders' settings wouldn't necessarily be compatible with the 744T?

in theory no, since each model has slightly different settings (inhdd, extra channels, etc). Where that is written to the config file, there may be no error correction handling when loading bum stuff to a different version.

He might have corrupted the data on the CF card he was trying to load if it locked up the machine and he had to pull the battery. He could have even improperly removed the CF from his first machine? I would make sure both machines are on the same firmware and start over from scratch. It is just a matter of copying one file from machine to machine but I would bet it is a firmware culprit. Probably fastest and easiest for SD to diagnose though.  ;D

I second the differing firmware diagnosis.
