Title: New sub-$1000 Universal Player
Post by: jmz93 on November 10, 2009, 05:13:21 PM
Since I don't currently have anything that plays Blu-Ray, and since my trustworthy Pioneer Elite universal player is a few years old, this really got my attention.

Any opinions pro or con, on this unit or the company Obo Digital generally, would be most welcome.

OPPO - BDP-83 SE BLU-RAY PLAYER
$899 US, listed at:

I have no idea if that is a good price or not.

That's the standard price, you can buy it direct from Oppo as well. The BDP-83 (not SE version) is just $500. Here is OPPO's recommendation, http://www.oppodigital.com/
"OPPO Digital recommends the BDP-83 Special Edition to customers who primarily use the analog audio output to connect to either a dedicated stereo or a multi-channel surround system. For customers who primarily use the HDMI output to connect to an A/V receiver or directly to a TV/projector, and for customers who primarily use the optical/coaxial digital audio output, the standard BDP-83 is recommended."

Anyway it gets rave reviews in the audio mags. I have had an oppo player for a few years now and it's a great little machine, run into my Bel Canto DAC it sounds phenomenal. Run analog out it sounds much more expensive than it's $180 price tag.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy this based on my experience with Oppo and the reviews I have read.
