Title: TSKB: Checksum entire drive for MAC - MAC users step inside please!
Post by: kfrinkle on November 11, 2009, 10:29:30 AM
Hey kids, thought I would ask here.  I am part of a project that archives a bands live recordings.  We have many members, do tons of updates etc... One way we found to make sure that everyone's drives are exact is to checksum.  This has not been a problem for all the PC users, as TLH works like a champ.  Does anyone have some good advice for those members on the project who are running MACs?  I have a couple of them, and they are having a problem creating a checksum for an entire drive.  The drive is quite large, over 550GB and doing things folder by folder is NOT an option.

I had searched and found this free program:

http://www.soft32.com/download_192816.html

But it only does one directory at a time.  Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated, as I have no clue when it comes to MACs, as I do not own one.

I would think with bsd being the heart of OS X there should still be a md5 check
binary still in there somewhere that could be called up from a command line.
don't know for sure though since I've never owned a mac either..
If nothing else a bump to the top for the OS X users to see.

From what I understand, there is.... Perhaps someone can enlighten me on how to recursively use it so I can pass it along to the projects' MAC users.

dcfldd creates hashes for an entire drive.
md5deep creates md5 hashes recursively (for a directory).

Mac OS's "Disk Utility" can create a single checksum of an entire disk or partition. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1885.html
