Post by: jgp1313 on November 11, 2009, 09:53:26 PM
have found 10" r-r with 1987 new years live at coliseum fm broadcast. sound quality A++. would like to copy to digital , flac then upload.  i can copy it to cd than upload to computer than run through FLAC frontend for sigs, but i was told this process would degrade the files. any suggestions.  i live in hagerstown, md. anyone in the area that could be of any help would be most grateful.  Once in a a life time show.

If you do decide it is an improvement over existing sources, your best bet is to transfer it via a high quality A/D converter at 24/96.  If it were my tape, I'd probably just pass it along to Charlie Miller or Jamie Wadell if they were up for doing it.

This show has been commercially released as "Ticket to New Years"

granted that's a dvd but it looks like the stream was even pulled for the fm's/sbds.

There are already numerous sources of that show out there. However, if it's that good quality- I would recommend you contact the guys at MOTB. They have excellent quality equipment for transfers.

ps. I was at that run. Too much fun for words! Good luck!

I thought the whole MOTB thing was for FOB audience recordings (hence "Mouth of the Beast").  If they aren't up for it, I'd suggest posting over at Lossless Legs (www.shnflac.net) and seeing if Jamie or one the folks over there is up for working their mojo.  Not only does he have a nice digital workstation but he'll also track down other sources to use to splice in any missing portions due to reel flips, pauses etc.

Yes, FOB is their primary focus, but I thought it might be worth a try.

If this is a Pre-FM recording and master quality, it would have some value. However, if it is a recording of the FM broadcast (off air recording) then it is most likely only of value to the person who recorded it for their own listening pleasure.

Find someone with 1bit DSD technology ...beyond 24/96 just for archival proposes, then let some one have at the DSD's to convert down, clean up then get to the public. and yes lossless legs is a good place for folks with editing knowledge.

I would say that 24/96 is high rez and of archival quality. There are pros and cons to DSD vs 24/96 with many folks singing praises for both. The main draw back with DSD is that it is totally in the can. There is not much playback gear for raw DSD, thus the need to then convert to WAVE, which, in my opinion, you're better off sticking with throughout the entire process.

However, this may not even matter depending on the source of this tape. Is it a pre-airing audio recording of the show or a compressed for video soundtrack. If the latter, it is not worth the effort.
