Title: Oh, the joy!
Post by: s1rrah on January 15, 2010, 09:41:27 PM
Really.

I haven't been so overwhelmingly joyful to discover an online forum since first discovering www.overclock.net and www.xtremesystems.org back in 2002 when I first got in to overclocking computers.

(that's a stellar compliment, btw)

 :)

I'm a long time live music taper, taping via built in camera mics for about six years now and with passingly decent results.

But for the past six months, I've decided to invest in some relatively decent mics and field recorders and have otherwise started to bend my nose to the grindstone of improved sonics. Which means, of course, separating the live video capture process from the live music capture process ... and so far, things have been pretty okay.

Until discovering this forum, I had absolutely no idea their was such a kick ass resource out there for live music field recording.

Oh, the joy.

Pardon me while I weep.

LOL.

So yeah ... I'm pretty much a noob to live music field recording (at least in regards to producing really good results) although I've been trying my hand at it for quite a while.

Anyway.

Just wanted to say hello. I look forward to more involvement.

Do rock on, yo!

Joel, glad to have you aboard ;D

I remember when I first came to the boards-- I can't even think of how many LATE LATE LATE nights I spent sitting at the screen just reading; familiarizing myself with all of the different acronyms, mic configurations, and techniques, not to mention of course the mics themselves, the pre-amps (I came in not even knowing what a Preamp was!), the Analogue to Digital converters (affectionately known 'round these parts as "A/D," "A-D," or "A to D"), and the recording units.  Then you move into the peripherals like windscreens, stands, bags, shockmounts, cables, batteries, and battery chargers.

There's tons here to read up on, as you've discovered.  Just be sure that before posting you run a quick search for the topic you're interested in, and everyone will love you all the more.

Again, glad to have you aboard, let me be the first to invite you to feel free to PM me if you ever need any personal help!  I'm nowhere NEAR most of the guys on this board, but I'll help when I can!!!

As has been stated many times in the past, check you wallet at the door!  It's easy to get sucked in.  But for those of us that are hobbyists, it's a cool hobby with lots of cool people.  I've met tons of people personally after talking to them for months and years on ts.com first, which is beyond cool.  We also have a good number of pros that read and contribute regularly.  So, you're very correct, this is a fantastic resource for discovering almost anything you want to know about recording...not to mention it's a great community of like minded people.  I wouldn't feel shy in the least about asking whatever is on your mind.  Although a search might show that alot of questions have been asked in the past, open discussion often morphs into discussions and subjects that are interesting and new.

PS:  My three favorite sites on the web are www.taperssection.com, www.etree.org, and www.archive.org.

I second you on archive.org ... man what a resource!

I just tapped it last weekend to make a vid for my low-fi acoustic band, "the gods of victory" ...

The song is ours but the video is old burlesque content from the prelinger archives at archive .org, check it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxL__49mvZY

Anyway ... I appreciate the warm welcome and I'll be hitting folks up regularly as I film/record more local and touring acts around Houston.

And re: wallet ...

No worries ...

I'm a long time and very active member at head-fi.org and have already dropped at least six thousand dollars on headphones and headphone amplifiers and DACs alone ... so won't hurt to drop a few thousand more on some dope recording gear.

Thanks again for the welcome.

Best.

Wow. It just keeps getting better.

Not only are political threads allowed, but one can say, "shit" too!

Awesome!

(and that's a damn rare couple of things in high traffic online forums, outside of head-case.org, that is)

Rock on.

 ;)

It is a nice site and I have only been on it for almost two years now and I have acclimated 58 days of login time so you can see it is addicting...that would be higher if I had the net at home.

have fun, enjoy the show and PEACE

There are some things we get really passionate about, but (IMHO) we are comparatively sane when put up against head-fi...

Wow. It just keeps getting better.

Not only are political threads allowed, but one can say, "shit" too!

It's a community that is largely comfortable with "self-regulation". There are some outlying examples (such as threads getting moved to the Sewer or removal of revenge-style posts with personal information posted), but it's largely wild-westish compare to other places on the net.

The only place I can think of that appears to be less moderated is a place called PhantasyTour, but it's not nearly as friendly or useful.  :P

Welcome aboard, enjoy the stay. Many of us (and even some who don't tape anymore) end up taking up residence.

I expect the majority of my time would be from work, too.  Lunch times only, of course.  ;D
