Title: Audix M1280 vs. ADX40
Post by: mblindsey on January 22, 2010, 03:27:17 PM
Inspired by this retail thread:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=124072.0

I sent an email to ask them the difference in these mics.  Discuss...

My Question:

"I'm considering purchasing a stereo pair of either the M1280 or ADX40
to record live music (mostly high volume).  I like the small footprint
of the capsule on the ADX40, but have only heard samples from the
M1280 (which I like).  Upon closer inspection, the capsules look very
similar. Do these, in fact, use the same capsules?  If not, given my
application, is one model significantly better than the other?"

Audix Response:

"Thanks very much for your inquiry.   I was glad to see your question
because it gives me a chance to boast about the differences between the
ADX40 and M1280, which are numerous.

The ADX40 is an electrets capsule with the FET built into the capsule.
This enables it to be separated from the power supply  (for use as a
lavalier type mic or a hanging mic) and it also allows it to run on
lower phantom power requirements.    It does sound very nice, especially
for its intended application.

The M1280 is quite a departure.   It has a very sophisticated preamp
circuitry built in to its body making it one of the worlds smallest
condenser mics with an integrated preamp and detachable cable.   The
only other mic smaller is the M1250B and M44  (both part of the same
Micros series).    This circuitry requires 48 volts phantom and is more
comparable to the circuitry found in our SCX series condensers.    It
has very high SPL handling and a very wide dynamic range providing more
of a studio quality sound.

The capsules between the ADX40 and the M1280 have some physical
similarities but their performance is quite different based on the above
parameters.   The M1280 would be the clear choice in my opinion.

I hope this answers some of your questions.   Don't hesitate if you have
other questions."

The 1290/80's are extremely under rated mics imo.  I am still satisfied with mine after over two years.

I could buy the big money mics but I'm just not convinced as to why I should.

I would be shocked if the adx40 sounded as nice as the 1290 although I would bet it sounds better than the at853.
