Ive recently been looking into upgrading my mics ,the recorder I mostly use is the Edirol R-09 hr
Ive decided on Church Audio cards I was wondering the difference between the CA-11 and the CA-14 's .and the prices . Also the preamps is it needed or could I just use the plug in power off the recorder theres a 9100 i guess and a 9000 any adivce. Ive been taping for years with just an iriver ifp899 and giant squid labs omi' clip mics /line in . Looking for higher quality recordings

One of main differences AFAIK is that the CA-11 have switchable capsules (cardioid or omni) while the CA-14 is fixed. Also, the CA-14 is reputed to yield higher quality recordings, and also has a non-removable windscreen attached to it. Not sure about the plug-in power question though.

hmm i was leaning more toward the 14's but didnt know the windscreen isnt removeable .what do those typically run ?
-
I have a pair i will let go of for $120ish
bp

Whats bp ? sounds fair

bp= Big Perm, his user name.

hah oh now i feel like a dumb ass :P

To answer the rest of your question, no, you should not use the recorder's plug-in power (unless the recorder has been specially modified to power these mics). Instead, you should get either one of the Church Preamps (the 9100 is better; has more gain settings) or just get a simple battery box. The preamps are around $129 I think; battery boxes can be had for $60 or less. Some people feel that using one of the pres yields higher quality recordings because the electronics in the pre are better than those in the Edirol (very likely true); though it is worth pointing out that if you are recording amplified rock music, you may not hear much of a difference.

to follow up with everyone's statements, get this and then you're ready to roll:
-ca-14 (start with cards and then get ominis)
-pre amp, st-9100
-you will need a mic stand / light stand
-some way of putting the mics on the light stand:
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-GNA-3
I have that with the shock mount and it requires some reducer. someone else could chime in as what it is
-interconnector cable from pre-amp to recorder
-perhaps an extension cable used from the mics to the pre-amp
-batteries for HR and pre-amp
-
All set on batteries and cables ,as for the stand and the t mount Ill mostly be doing stealth recordings seeing as the type of music I listen to and am interested in recording has very little open taping policys but I do plan down the road to purchase those items. Now if I could only get a hold of the guy who makes them.

damn just checked my messages and got a reply from him

yeah, he gets back to people quickly but it may take some time to actually get the mics in the mail.

can these be used with the soundprofessionals hat mount?

No because the main problem with that mount is it does not allow for the "back vents" to work properly.. It would work for other types of mics just not mine.
And ps.. I thought it was pretty funny about the whole "bp" thing.. YOU did not look like an ass, kinda reminded me of something I would do lol...

Actually, Chris, correct me if I am wrong, but that hat mount would work fine with OMNI mics, including yours, because they don't have back vents... however, it would not work with cardiods of any kind. Am I wrong about that?

During the brief time that I owned both the CA-11 mics and a Sound Pro 'taper hat,' I did use them together with success. The CA-11 capsules are just about the same diameter as the AT853 capsules, and so you can get that size grommet for the hat and it will fit. It's true that the 'vent holes' on the CA-11 will be blocked by the rubber grommet, so when I used them together I pushed the CA-11 out a bit so that they wouldn't be blocked and it worked fine. The AT853 work better with the hat because the vents are not blocked even when the capsule is pushed right to the edge of the grommet hole (so that it is flush with the surface of the hat, perfect for stealth), due to a longer mic body, but still you can make the CA-11 work with it. It's just not as sexy. ;)

They would work with 853 or ca-11 mics if they are pushed out enough to get past the vent.. But you would have some strange directionality issues because of the gromit behind the vents.
