Title: Elation Microphones
Post by: OOK on January 31, 2010, 03:17:33 PM
Does anyone know of a source for Elation microphones in the USA?  The Soundroom used to carry them but it doesn't look like they do anymore.  I have done a search but get the russian site which doesn't seem all that active.

There's no US distributor anymore. I actually got mine directly from that web site. The site hasn't been updated in a while but when I wrote to them last year they responded within a couple of days. sales@elationmiclab.com should put you in touch with Michael Stepanov.

I like them though I rarely tape alongside other folks so it's tough to compare. I did get the change to do two two-night stands this fall at Guster shows, one night of each show was with the KM201's and the other was with a set of Neumann KM150's. I definitely don't hear $2500 worth of difference, even when factoring in hypers vs. cards, but my ears and playback equipment aren't all that trustworthy. Those comps are here:

and here:

There's also four sources of Blues Traveler 11-05-07, all run from the front pole at the Paradise in Boston but the rigs are so diverse that it's hard to attribute any differences to mics vs. pres:

I've been running them since '03; the original attraction to them was an old article in Electronic Musician where the KM201's were put up against a bunch of other SDC's...I only know of one other guy (Ed Guidry) who runs them for live taping so I basically bought them sound unheard.

Article is here if you want to read it: http://emusician.com/mics/emusic_tell_truth/

FWIW I, Ed Guidry, have never had these mics.  I patched out of a pair at Berkfest about 10 years ago.

Hey Ed...oops, my bad. Thought they were in your toolkit but deprecated in favor of those U89's. ;D That's right in the timeline when they came on my radar so that must have been why your name stuck with me.
