Title: Ubuntu Server Torrent Seed Box help...
Post by: Fatah Ruark (aka MIKE B) on February 06, 2010, 06:43:10 PM
Working on this weekends dorky project...  :P

Wondering if anyone here has set up an old computer as a torrent seed box?

I am using Ubuntu Server 9.10 as my OS, and using Putty to SSH into it.

I have all of my recordings on the servers hard drives and I'd like to start seeding them via the seed box. I'd like it to be easy to download the torrent file via my Windows machine and then save the file to the Seed Box and be able to easily select the folder where the correct files are.

I was thinking of setting up rtorrent with rutorrent as a web UI.

I am looking for a good tutorial on this, but am having trouble finding one that I can understand.

If you have a better idea for this, I'm up for that as well.

TIA!

I have the same setup (OS wise at home). In the past, I've used torrentflux, and been pretty happy with it. I'm currently using Deluge, and moderately happy with it (though it lacks some of the basic features that torrentflux had). I hadn't heard of ruTorrent, but I'm thinking I'll give that a shot.

I've moved over to running uTorrent under Wine.

It works fine so I'm going to stick with it for now.

The only thing I don't like is I can't make Ubuntu see uTorrent as the default program so I have to download the torrent file to the torrent box and then manually start the torrent in uTorrent.

I'm mostly using this to seed my shows, so not a huge deal. I only occasionally download something else.

Can't you just set utorrent to scrape your torrent file directory automatically?   Will that feature of utorrent not work under Wine?

Yes, and why not let rtorrent scrape a file directory? I save torrent-files on a samba share on my seed box (htcp actually) that rtorrent scrapes.

Yep. Doing that now. I just download the torrent file on my desktop and save it to the seedbox over my network and uTorrent automatically starts downloading. Very nice.

Now to find a way to easily move the 100+ torrents I have going on my desktop to the seedbox. I think I will have to do that manually.
