I'm trying to record from my home cd player in to the M10 (actually i used 2 different portable players).
I'm using this cable :

I'm going from the 2 female jacks in the cd player where the speakers are normally attached (and which I normally use to input into the PC) into line-in or mic-in of the M10, but am getting no signal. Dead silence. I even tried a cable going from headphone jack of the player into line-in and mic-in of the M10. No signal.
Hopefully, i'm doing something wrong. Am I using the wrong settings, wrong type of cable or do I require the cable suggested in the manual i.e. Sony RK-G129??

Should work. Presumably you did press record-enable and you did try adjusting the level with the auto switch turned off?

...if "record-enable" = pressing record button yes! auto switch off and level adjusted to no avail! i just get peaks when inserting the jaks. othe rthan that dead...
Line out seems to work ok...
Also When i connect EXTERNAL mics (sonic studios) to both line in and mice in it works fine!

Nothing you are doing sounds "wrong." If it works with mics it presumably should work fine with the CD player. Sounds like either the cable or the output on the player itself is problematic.
I'd definitely go line-in, too, and not mess with mic-in from a hot source like a CD player.

I dont know what might be wrong with the CD player output....I didn't buy the Cd player yesterday but works with my PC....It's a Sanyo DC-DA380. I'm using the video/auxillary (double) female jacks as output from the CD player.

you'd see some signal. It also makes sense that you see the pop when inserting them from where the connection temporarily shorts, thats normal.
Here's my questions:
When you have a CD playing with the cable connecting your PC and your CD player, do you get a signal if recording on your PC? Pull the PC end and plug it into your M10, still get one?
Take the cable and go from your PC to the M10, get a signal while playing a file on your PC? If so, then the cable and M10 are setup right and the issue is the CD player's outputs.

ANSWER 1: NO, if using the cable I use from Player to PC (the one which starts double male into player and ends single jack into PC soundcard).
YES, if I use cable from headphones output of CD player into M10 or PC. Problem is I cannot hear what is being recorded!I have a splitter. N.B. I'm to record from FM Radio not actual CD.
QUESTION 2: Pull the PC end and plug it into your M10, still get one?
ANSWER 2: NO.

ANSWER 3: YES. Pc to M10 line-in.

ANSWER 4: sure enough because the double jack at the back of the CD player reads......IN......! So the only output I have is the headphones jack (which isnt thast sturdy but I'll manage).

It's not a just CD player. It's a compact system including a CD player and it's own speakers, so it makes sense that it wouldn't have a line out. As you say, you'll have to make do with the headphone out.

nope! there's no line-out from the player.
I have attached a splitter on the headphones jack to monitor what is going on.....the problem is the volume drops CONSIDERABLY when attaching also the headphones! The volume has to be increased from the player almost to top and even go mic-in choice in the recording application on the PC (which increses the noise)...strange. I'll try going into the M10 and see if I can monitor thru the M10 headphones...YEP IT WORKS!! CD PLAYER HEADPHONES OUT > M10 LINE-IN > HEADPHONES of M10 to hear what's going on.

Why not just use the CD player headphone out directly to the m-10 and use the headphone out on the Sony to monitor?
just curious, but what are you trying to record from this system to your m-10? Radio?
