Title: Sound Devices USBPre
Post by: kirk97132 on February 15, 2010, 04:23:26 PM
Has anyone every used an external USB Battery setup to power the USBPre?  can it be done?  Can you use something like the set up for externally powering a MT?  It supplies 5V @ 1amp

its been years since i ran one, but i *think* a pc must be involved and there are drivers to install. with that said, its prolly never been tried.

I'm thinking that if it can be powered up then I could use the spdif or line level outputs.  Reason I ask is that a buddy has one and I'd like to use it as an external  pre and/or AD converter.  I do not need it to feed signal via the USB jack.  The manual says it requires 5V 500mA on USB

Maybe there is a work-around....  but I also think that a computer must be involved.  I don't think it can be used as a stand alone.  But I've never used one.

IIUC, there's some data transfer necessary to operate it. Here's the official version:

That said, it would be no harm in trying.
Or get a netbook, like Umid mbook BZ, and hook it up just to get it running:
