......and two directional mics for recording frequencies higher than 20,000Hz....40,000Hz PCM sound files. ok so how good is YOUR hearing?
-
i'm holding out for the 8 mic configuration with the frequencies higher than 50,000Hz

But the buttons are in Japanese! How cool! :o

I've just tried recording my ultrasonic rat deterrent device at a distance of 1 metre using my shiny new Sony PCM-M10 set to 24/96.
The ultrasonic sweep tone emitted by the device shows very clearly in a spectral display of the recording, right up to 48kHz.
No additional capsules required...
The recording can be downloaded at http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/22/1451533/M10%20ultrasonic.WAV

Since none of you slackers can help me out, had to look up W-XY myself ... <grin> Just kidding!!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambisonics
Planar B-Format, a form of Ambisonic recording, similar to what the Soundfield devices do but apparently in only two dimensions (hence the "planar").

Ambisonics was my initial thought when reading the title of the thread, but after looking at the description and photos it's obvious to me that ambisonic techniques are not applied in this device. I think they just borrowed the 'W' term to denote that it has omni mics as well as the 'almost' coincident directionals. The mic patterns and placements would not work as a 2-dimentional ambisonic array and the photos of the pickup patterns in their literature seem to indicate simple switching between the directional and omni pairs.
Peter, I wonder if older rats loose their high frequency hearing? ;)
