Now that I have pretty flat mics (DPA 4021s), I figured it'd be fun to see my room response. I generated a 20 Hz - 22 kHz sine wave sweep at -6 dB over 3 minutes using sound forge and recorded it on my laptop.
I did 2 recordings. One with a mic 1m from one of the tweeters and one with a mic at the listening position.
The good news is that my speakers are pretty flat, even by this unscientific test. The bad news is that my room sucks more than a reality TV show.
Here's the speaker (Von Schweikert VR-1):

And here's the room :banging head:

Hmm, why not nail in some egg cartons onto your wall? ;)

might be time for some room treatment. there are a ton of great cheap ideas over at www.tapeop.com

yikes!
i'd hate to see what my room looks like.
I think you need to use an omni to get even remotely accurate w/a test like this. So, I wouldnt' put too much worry behind your room recording.

In the low frequencies, I can hear it, which is kind of the reason I wanted to test this out to begin with. When I played back the sweep, it sounded like someone was turning the volume up and down as it played.
I'll probably move to a different apartment complex much closer to DC over the summer, so I'm not really going to worry about it. I'll just use headphones for the important stuff.
