Title: ca11S - r09hr but no preamp, advice needed
Post by: bobstammers on March 02, 2010, 05:00:31 PM
Hi all,

I'm hoping to tape on Saturday night but have "lost" my Chris Church preamp I usually use with my CA11s and R09hr. My replacement will not arrive for another a couple of weeks yet. I have a cheap 1.5v battery box from my first mic (yoga EM 8) which I could use or plug the mics in and use plug in power or maybe just use the internal mics. The gig itself will have some quiet acoustic parts midway through songs which generally build to a loud finish, it is in a town hall which holds approx 1500 people.

Can anyone advise which way to go. I accept that the quality will differ to what I normally get but hey I would like to get a semi decent recording.

Thanks in advance, I've read some great advice here since I started taping 2 years ago.

Rob.

iirc (I could be wrong), the R-09hr will provide something like 2.5v on plugin...seems like that would be better than the 1.5v box. there are people here who know much more about this than I do, though

If the mics have the 4.7k mod plug in power on the R9 should be good to go AFAIK. If not, Im not sure. Id use the external mics and not the internals if it were me. You can always try to boost it in post if you dont get the levels you were hoping for.

Where are you located?  Perhaps you can borrow a preamp from a fellow taper?

Edit: I see you are in the UK.  I think there are quite a few guys running Church Audio gear in the UK.  Try posting in the Team UK thread to see if there is someone willing to help you out.

R-09 internal mics are very poor for music. If you can borrow a battery box that provides 9 volts (actually 5 volts in fine for the CA-11's) you'd get a much better recording than using the internals..

Maybe illconditioned can chime in here. I know he's said he's used the CA-11's mic in with the R-09HR and got good results, but I can't remember if he said he ever used the R-09 without a battery box.
