At the venue that i normally tape in, i usually grab sbd + aud. the only place i can put the aud source mics is on top a ~6ft shelf beside the soundboard. unfortunately, this shelf is also behind some tables. thus, the majority of the time, I have a fairly decent aud source, but very chatty. when i matrix the two together, the talking is audible in the quieter parts, but not as much of an issue when the band is in full rock mode. what do you guys do in this situation? i've been decreasing volume of the aud source whenever i can hear more audible chatter, but would like some alternative methods or insight.

Mix for music balance first, then chatter second.
I found developing a zen for crowd noise to be really helpful for listening to live recordings.
If it's really a shelf/ledge; ever thought about getting a large C-clamp or Superclamp and articulating arm to gain a couple extra feet in just about any direction?

i dunno, i've found that there's good crowd noise and bad. i know i don't want a super dry recording, but at the same time sometimes it really bothers me because some of it seems really out of place. I don't mind whooo-ers or cheer-ers, but in my case it's mainly people who chat like they don't even know a band is playing. yeah i have thought about it, i'm actually even considering getting a mini-tripod to get a little extra height, but don't know if it's worth it because the venue itself has a pretty low ceiling, so i'm not really gaining that much distance from the chatters.

have you talked to the sound engineer about letting you use two empty channels on the house snake so you can place microphones on stage?

also, if you are running from way in the back, you might want to just use one hyper pointed directly at the stage to help to cut down on reverberant sound bouncing off the wall. you can just send the sound to L & R in post.

Or the soundguy can backfeed a boardfeed to the stage. You can grab it from the stage box. Then put mics stage lip and run all 4 cables back to the side of the room halfway back. That's what I'm doing tonight in fact. Running everything to my video camera.

generally yes. though most bands i see, i already know they allow it.
