Just wondering. I haven't seen any on the web.

I doubt you will ever see this happen. It would cost too much to justify the result. I have an H4n, and I think it is a great deck for the money, but the mods are generally done on more expensive (and more popular) units.

Interesting. I thought all of these recorders are within reach of each other. To my ears, if someone could do a preamp mod to the H4N it would stand along any recorder out there. I really like the sound but the noise floor can become any issue. They could maybe mod the headphone output as well. I was also under the assumption that the H4N was a really popular unit.

And it's popular, from what I can see, I have one, and I know a lot of people using the H4n as the only recorder for everything, from concert tapping, ambient, voice over, EFX and foley... onboard mics or externals... for the money no other beats it, but as Walstib62 mentioned, a mod would cost a lot, higher than the street price it has, and for that money you would go for a more expensive machine... it's a wonderful machine, you can take it anywhere and record without any previous set planning... it just works, with a very good sound...

I would have to agree that the recorder price is cheaper than a mod and re-selling it could be done. If you're looking for a quieter unit, check out the sony m10.
four track recording is sweet but if it means coming at the cost of being a little noisy, I would rather settle on two fewer and quieter channels.
