Title: So I tried to self mod my UA5>>
Post by: waltflanagansdog on February 05, 2004, 08:24:39 PM
How the hell do I know if i succeeded.  My JB3 is on firmware 1.10.06 (until the install disc arrives), and I have been told that the aid firmware doesn't record.

Any suggestions?  Help?

Thanks.

plug it in, if no smoke, thats a good sign i'd say, but make sure the digital switch on the back is to coax, and then take off the cap for the optical out, and see if its red, and glowing, then click the switch back and forth, if it stays on then your good to go..  hope it works out, i just got mine today too, but a warm mod..  hope you like it man.

hey, matt -- do I gather that you have owned a digimod UA5 and a warm mod UA5? How much difference is there? Could you describe it?

I have a digimod UA5 and I'm wondering whether I should upgrade.

What mics do you use?

You won't find firmware on the disc.  Download from Creative,  Nomadness or the NJB3Tapers yahoo group.

havn't owned both, only the warm mod. which has only been in my possesion for a day, but yea, i've ran one many times before, so i know how it works standalone, now it's just getting it to work on PC.  i couldn't tell you the difference, but from what i've heard, its pretty night and day, if you really listen to differences like that, but i'm not so much into it.  i have heard some octava's > digimod ua-5 and i like my tapes better. 2 reasons probably, from my akg's to octava's and the wmod, but i'd be damn happy for a first rig with octava's which i almost did.

i thought why not go akg 391's.  i'm sure there are other people who have run both with the same mics, that would be the way to really tell, check archive.org, i'm sure there is somthing out there that could tell you the difference. if you wanna hear some stuff i've done pm me, let me know, i'll hook you up.  peace.

I run AkG 451's and the warm mod to the UA5 makes them sail! The tapes sound smoother feely type happiness, like a hot thick cup of cocoa.  The digimod just lets you not use the computer for coax and optical out.
Thanks for the 24 bit info up there in the other thread dklein.

"but make sure the digital switch on the back is to coax"

I thought with a digi mod that this switch doesn't really do anything either way.  Is this true that it shold be left on coax?

that switch is input selection only
