Another obvious one......gain on the ad-20 up?  Turn em all the way clockwise?

Are you using the "in" on the 7 pin and not the "out"?

yep turned all the way clockwise

im using the "in" on the 7pin, i tried both and when i did the "out" that is when i was getting no input

So now you have input just no levels?  Check the battery in the battery box.  Not familiar w/ the AD-20.  Is it possible to see if its getting levels?  Any lights?

you're using a 7-pin/optical cable. often, d8s won't latch on to the digital (at least, the coax - this is the first time i've heard of anyone going optical > d8) out of an ad-20 with a passive cable. that's just the way the combo is!

yea i have input now just no levels, the battery on the box is fine, there is no way to see if the ad-20 is getting levels but i know it is powered on by a red light in front

i got an adapter for it to work opitcal out of the ad-20 with the 7pin on the other end into the d8, if that makes any sense

I think your problem is the 1/8" female/male connector.

the 1/8" inch jack on the AD-20 is an S/PDIF output, not an input.  the only inputs on the AD-20 are the XLR inputs.  so, with no audio going into the AD-20, of course you're not seeing any levels on the D8.  you need a 1/8" female to two XLR connectors...  I know Len at Core Sound sells this cable, and I'm that there are other places to buy it as well.  or you could just order the connectors and solder it together yourself.

hope this helps.

edit to say: nevermind, it looks like you got this figured out.  you can ignore what I wrote above...
