which would be a better investment. a set of monitors or a good headphone amp. looking to spend about $300. just want something to use as a "reference" system for listening to recordings. i'm leaning more towards a set of powered monitors. i'd be listening via my computer so that's why i'd need the powered ones. i think. also not even sure if $300 bucks is even concievable for a powered set of speakers so feel free to tell me i'm crazy.

I have seen powered tannoy monitors for for $350-400 on ebay...not out of the realm of possibility

For 300 bucks, I like Behringer's Truth monitors.

if you already have a set of nice headphones i'd go w/ the headphone amp.

IMO monitors give you a much more accurate representation of what somthing actually sounds like than headphones...
-
if it were me id get a good headphone amp and a good SACD/DVD-A player and listen to everything in stereo.

depends on what you are doing. When I am mixing a SBD and AUD source, I want to hear what it sounds like to the last detail, especially to make sure they line up correctly, and headphones give me that detail better than monitors. However, in the case where I am adding effects, eq'ing out a source, I will use headphones first, then play it over my playback system, which gives me two points of reference....

right, headphones will defitely give you more detail, but if Im mixing somthing, Id always do the final mix on monitors...

I use those headphones too, they work fine for me, any reason why you want to go with a pair of monitors over the 7506's?

i'm leaning more towards monitors so that other people can listen as well.
