Which would you prefer as an A>D converter and why?
Sound Devices 744T or Apogee MiniMe.
I'm sure someone is gonna suggest a different one, but that won't help since these are the two that I own.

I think that there is a strong case to be made for each, I ran the MME in front of my SD 722 for a while, but after several shows going 1 set with mme 1 set without, I just couldn't justify carrying it around anymore...I sold it for more toys ;D
others may agree, and other may disagree...the beauty of the site and the ability for everyone to build their own rig to sound the best the THEIR ears

7xx. I find the 7xx ADC more natural sounding than the Minime. The portable Apogee ADCs (AD1K, Minime) have a sonic signature to which my ears are sensitive, producing (to my ears) a slightly "etched" sound. Difficult for me to explain, as I don't feel I have adequate vocabulary to do so. Anyway, that's my vote: 7xx.

The Sound Devices 7xx series A/D converters are some of the best that I have ever heard. I am not a fan of their preamplifiers, however.

SD over Minime.
There are two occasions when I would chose the minime:
1) I was going to use the soft limiter.
2) I had dark mics (I think the minime has a brighter top end).
I'd love to comp the two (I heard R-44/minime comps), but short of that, thats when I'd use it.

I know exactly what your talking about...it that Apogee sound. I personally like the sound, but i think the type of mics and pre make a big difference...I like the SD 7xx a/d with my schoeps MKxx>vms5u a lot better than with the mme thrown into the mix (IMHO)
